CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Though Marie returned to June Manor during the Quiet Block, she found one of the newer guests—a businesswoman from New York if Marie’s memory served correct—sitting in the dining room with Rebeka. They were sipping tea and eating Posey’s delicious apple turnovers. Marie took great joy in seeing Rebeka speaking so animatedly to a guest. The girl was slowly but surely coming out of her shell.

Other than their conversation, the bed-and-breakfast was quiet. Marie could hear the ocean murmuring from the beach through the walls as she made her way into her bedroom. There, she swapped out her shoes and changed into a hooded sweatshirt. There was a lot on her mind and she thought a nice, brisk jog along the frigid beach might help to clear it.

But as soon as she slipped the sweatshirt over her head, there was a knock at her door, followed by Posey’s voice. “Marie? You in there?”

“Yeah, Posey, come on in.”

Posey did so and it was clear that something was bothering her. This wasn’t new, as it seemed something had continuously been bothering her ever since the much-discussed Katie Stillson had opened a competing bed-and-breakfast and had undertaken her particularly nasty ad campaign.

“You okay, Posey?”

“Yeah, but you should know…I sometimes feel like I’m some sort of weird public relations liaison for this place.”

“What do you mean?”

Posey handed Marie her phone; Marie was not at all surprised to find that Facebook was open.

“Am I going to have to limit your Facebook use?” Marie asked, trying to sound funny.

“Just read the post, please.”

Terrified of what new issues might be waiting around the corner, Marie read the post and the article that was attached. It told the story of what had happened to Levi Bryant, only it was padded with small-town speculation.
